  • Before Body Basics 4th Grade


    Class Description

    Preparing for how bodies can change during puberty while learning about thoughts and feelings.

    Before Body Basics playfully and age-appropriately introduces youth to how their bodies, thoughts and feelings may be changing as they prepare to go through puberty. Students will acknowledge their places of support and guidance in preparation for puberty, building confidence and trust.

    Topics Discussed Include:

    • What is puberty? What is adolescence?
    • Changing bodies are normal! What to expect.
    • What is a thought? What is a feeling?
    • Respecting all bodies types rocks!

    Activities Include:

    • Creating group agreements
    • Positive Adolescence Maps
    • Amazing facts about changing bodies!
    • The Story of Betty and Reproductive System Rita
    • Back Up Your Buzz!
    • Time Together at home: Conversations and activities connecting parenting adults with their youth, supporting a positive foundation for her journey through puberty.

  • Body Basics 5th Grade


    Class Description

    Creating positive impressions of changing bodies.

    Body Basics provides the information and support youth need to understand the physical and emotional changes associated with puberty. In a fun, supportive, and open environment, students connect with each other while sharing their thoughts, feelings, and experiences together. This type of honest sharing normalizes puberty so youth know that they are not alone as they are changing.

    Topics Discussed Include

    • Changes in body shape and size (weight/height/breast development)
    • Looks labels and how they can affect how we see our bodies
    • Hormones and brain changes
    • Ovulation and menstruation

    Activities Include

    • Learning about the reproductive system
    • Familiarization with menstrual products
    • Time Together at home: Parenting adults and youth talk about the changes associated with puberty using a series of questions and conversation prompts.

  • Body Basics 6th Grade


    Class Description

    Cultivating body awareness and confidence through healthy body care and positive attitudes.

    Body Care Basics brings awareness to the importance and value of healthy physical body connection and care and how self-esteem affects how youth feel about their bodies. We examine the ways media and society present messages that can challenge body confidence and learn skills and techniques to boost and protect body connection, body confidence and self-image.

    Topics Discussed Include

    • Basic body care
    • What about privacy and why it is so important
    • Body confidence smashers and builders
    • What about makeup?
    • Self-esteem boosters

    Activities Include

    • The Self-Esteem Stairway
    • Body Confidence Meter
    • Creating Body Intentions
    • The Great and Hard Things About Being a 6th Grader
    • Time Together at home: Parenting adults and youth discuss and share body topics such as makeup and body care routines and product safety

  • Beyond Body Care Basics 7th Grade


    Class Description

    Connecting the power of thoughts and feelings to body attitudes and behaviors through awareness and positive action from within.

    Beyond Body Care Basics explores the direct connection between thoughts and feelings affecting body attitudes and behaviors. Students will learn to examine the powerful influences of their outer and inner worlds and how they affect self-esteem and the way they treat their bodies. Rather than just accept internal and external body projections, students will learn how to evaluate thoughts and feelings presented to them and how to “shop” for the healthiest balance without compromise.

    Topics Discussed Include

    • Self-esteem check-in
    • Life topics: school, family, friends and self
    • Standing up to yourself
    • Don’t believe everything you think

    Activities Include

    • Shopping your thoughts
    • Looking in the mirror with care
    • Thoughts and Feelings Maps
    • The great and hard things about being a 7th grader
    • Stand up, show up: What changes do you want for the world?

  • Beyond Body Basics 8th Grade


    Class Description

    Establishing healthy perspectives around sex and sexuality through awareness and knowledge.

    Beyond Body Basics provides students with accurate and empowering information about sex and sexuality so that they can make healthy and safe choices as sexual beings. These classes provide students with a safe and comfortable place to talk openly and ask questions about gender and sexuality while learning about sexual health, birth control, and how to establish personal boundaries around intimacy. Before heading off to high school, let’s have youth’s sexual values in place.

    Topics Discussed Include

    • Gender identity and sexual orientation, sexual intercourse
    • Sexually transmitted infections
    • Protection and birth control
    • Relationships and love
    • Social pressures around sexual activity
